This is responsible technical work performing building
inspections during construction, alteration, or modification for
compliance with municipal codes. Incumbent coordinates with other
inspectors to examine building/zoning projects from initial permit
issuance through completion. Interprets and enforces applicable
codes/laws. Work is assigned/reviewed by the Deputy Building
Official and/or the Department Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Performs field inspections of installations according to
approved plans/specifications of the adopted codes and standards
under which project was permitted. Explains and interprets City
codes/standards to contractors, architects, property owners, etc.
involved in the construction process. Seeks resolution of any
differences/problems to ensure compliance with plans as approved.
Prepares oral and written progress reports on projects. Researches
and develops case histories for quasi-judicial and judicial cases
against violators of building codes/standards. Attends various
meetings. Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Good knowledge of laws, codes, and regulations relating to building
and construction. Good knowledge of construction techniques of
skilled trades (electrical, carpentry, painting, air conditioning,
masonry, and plumbing). Good knowledge of materials, practices, and
equipment of building construction. Good knowledge of stages of
construction in which possible defect and violations are most
easily observed and corrected. Good knowledge of principles and
specifications contained in legal construction documents and
contracts. Ability to prepare and present drawings, plans, and
specifications. Ability to prepare cost estimates and analysis.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
High School graduate or equivalent diploma required plus five
years' experience in building inspection/construction. Standard
Certification and current licensure by the State of Floridas
Department of Business and Professional Regulations or ability to
obtain such licenses within two years of hire as a 1 & 2 Family
Dwelling Inspector or one of the following: Building, Electrical,
Plumbing or Mechanical Inspector required. Prefer certification in
a field of specialty. A combination of education and experience may
Possession of Florida Operator's license and must be able to
provide dependable transportation. Must complete Inspector
certification by International Code Council, FL State Minimum
Standards, or comparable national agency in field of assignment
(building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical) within one year of
employment. Incumbent with primary assignment in electrical
inspections must possess Journeyman Electrician certification.
Construction Inspectors may be required to perform the inspections
for other departments as necessary.
During occasions of local emergencies, this position may be
required to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in
extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from

construction sites during all phases of construction, including
lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, traversing uneven
terrain and maintaining balance on inclines. Must occasionally work
in adverse weather conditions. Ability to communicate effectively,
both orally and in writing.
