Johnson & Johnsons Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI) is a cross-sector program within Johnson & Johnson Global External Innovation (GEI) that will transform the standard of care for lung cancer a critical need for patients around the globe today. The vision for the LCI is to develop solutions that prevent, intercept and cure lung cancer, enabling a future vision where there is a world without this devastating disease. By focusing on where the best science and innovation is being developed anywhere in the world, the LCI will eliminate lung cancer one patient at a time by developing holistic, solutions through consumer products, diagnostic, medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

The clinical and translational biomarker scientist will have responsibility for developing and effectively implementing biomarker strategies to support the clinical development plans for the therapeutic portfolio of the Lung Cancer Initiative (LCI) Pharmaceutical Sciences team. Working as part of clinical team, the clinical and translational biomarker scientist will develop and validate molecular, immunological, pathological, and/or imaging biomarkers to help improve understanding of disease biology, enable patient selection strategies, and evaluate response in lung cancer.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and maintain translational and clinical biomarker strategies to support assets within the LCI Pharmaceutical Science team portfolio
  • Providing biomarker input at Solution Development Teams and governance reviews
  • Supporting the development of biomarker related aspects of the trial design, study protocols, reference manuals, central lab worksheets clinical study reports, investigator brochures and regulatory documents
  • Working with internal biomarker groups, contract research organizations and collaborators to deliver validated biomarker assays
  • Working with the biology team to develop plans for clinical translation of biomarkers
  • Working with biomarker analysts/statistics to support analysis of biomarker readouts


  • Ph.D is required
  • 5+ years of biomarker experience is required
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing biomarkers in oncology trials, particularly lung cancer trials is required
  • Experience and track-record of the discovery, validation and clinical implementation of biomarker readouts-especially histological/pathological readouts, genomic readouts (mutational analysis/RNA-seq) and immunological readouts are required
  • Experience of working with Contract Research Organizations to deliver biomarker readouts is required
  • Knowledge and track-record of working to GCP principles as part of a clinical study team is required
  • Good interpersonal and matrix working skills is required
  • Ability to influence teams and key stakeholders
