Job Class Description
Provides initial mental health and follow-up assessment of
persons incarcerated in the Brevard County Jail Complex and
facilitates individual and group counseling.
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of
the time spent working in this class. Management may assign

established procedures. Makes appropriate referrals to necessary
services such as to the psychiatrist and security for housing
needs. Provides appropriate referrals for case management and

Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with
judicial, law enforcement, social service agencies, and physicians.
Provide assistance and support to physicians for medication
management for inmates needing chemical therapy.
Prepares necessary documents and maintenance of medical records
through timely preparation of progress notes and medical file
entries, including treatment and discharge planning notes. Records
daily statistics on mental health activities, events, and client
Prepares and maintains administrative documentation as required.
Prepares various specialized and statistical reports as

inmates. Provides consultation and training to medical personnel
and security staff.
Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary in the
efficient and effective operation of the Sheriff's Office.
Requires a Master's degree in social work, psychology, or a
behavioral health / closely related field.
Must be licensed in a behavioral health discipline in the State of
Must be a registered intern in a behavioral health field in the
State of Florida OR have met all the criteria required by the
Department of Health excluding the requirement of being overseen by
a qualified supervisor.
Interns will be required to attain State Licensure as a Mental
Health counselor within three years of employment.
Previous employment experience in a forensic or correctional

$48,089.60/yr - LICENSED Mental Health Specialist
$45,760.00/yr - Mental Health INTERN
Schedule: 40 hour workweek including weekends, holidays and on-call
situations. Current opening is for the mid-shift. Shift is eight
hours, the shift is flexible spanning between the hours of 10:00am
An eligibility list will be created for a period of one year.
During an emergency, the Sheriff will determine who is considered
an emergency responder and whose work is necessary to maintain the
operation of law enforcement and correctional facilities. This
determination is subject to change based on staffing and the
operational needs of the agency.
Requires successful completion of a pre-employment criminal
background investigation including polygraph. Requires drug test
prior to assuming position and if employed, will be subject to
return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable
suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
