The position shall exemplify the desired Culture of Choice and philosophies of Parrish Healthcare. Under the general supervision of the Perioperative Services Manager and under the direct supervision of the Surgery Clinical Coordinator and the OR Registered Nurse, the Surgical Scrub Technician provides support and assistance in the care of the patient undergoing invasive and other surgical procedures and in the preparation of supplies and the Operating Room for procedures.

  • Functions as a member of the surgical team for invasive and non-invasive procedures, maintains the integrity of the sterile field, provides for safe handling and labeling of medications and other solutions, monitors the field to provide for completion of accurate needle, sponge and instrument counts.
  • Assembles and opens supplies and equipment, prepares the OR suite for invasive and non-invasive procedures and anticipates variations of case specific supply needs. Provides for safe handling of equipment/instruments to minimize damage.
  • Provides for timely room turnover, including cleansing of the surgical site, application of dressings, instrument breakdown and room decontamination.
  • Performs assist circulating duties, positions patients, assists anesthesiologist, transports patients and other direct patient care as appropriate.
  • Participates as a member of the emergency surgical team and responds to emergency call within 20 minutes from notification.
  • Maintains accuracy of specialty instrument sets, restocks specialty carts and provides for updates of physician preference cards.
  • Maintains safe handling of equipment to prevent damage and loss. Mark and reports broken/damaged instrument for replacement.
  • Participates in preparations for cases, including pulling supplies and specialty equipment.
  • Demonstrates a full knowledge of surgical procedures and functions as a member of specialty team.
  • Participates in Quality Monitoring/Performance Improvement.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area.
    KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS Formal Education:
    Vocational or other technical school, certification, licensure, training or apprenticeship in a healthcare related field required beyond high school.

    Work Experience:
    1 year to Decision Making:
    Varied: Supervision is present on an "as needed" basis to establish general objectives and to identify potential resources for assistance. Independent judgment is required to select and apply the most appropriate procedures to achieve desired results.

    Problems are not standard/routine, but are often similar to those seen before. Solutions can often be found by using methods chosen before in similar situations. Some judgment is required to interpret problems and select appropriate solutions based upon similar situations that have occurred in the past.

    Current Week: Plan events that are expected to occur within a few working days.

    Internal Contacts:
    Requires regular contacts to discuss issues of moderate importance and to respond to inquiries. Occasionally requires contacts with employees at higher levels on matters requiring cooperation, explanation, and persuasion.

    External Contacts:
    Requires regular contacts to discuss issues of moderate importance and to respond to inquiries. Occasionally requires personal contact with the public involving matters requiring cooperation, explanation, and persuasion.

    Job-Related Knowledge:
    Formal Technical/Vocational Skills: Requires detailed knowledge of a specific technical function or a trade normally acquired by certification or formal vocational training. Possesses skills that allow modification of existing methods, procedures or forms. Knows policies and procedures, and can recommend a course of action based upon understanding these guidelines. Examples: May prepare reports, troubleshoot/repair major electrical or mechanical systems.

    Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
    Non-Certified Surgical Technologist (Must obtain Certification within 1 year of employment), or Certified Surgical Technologist, or State of Florida Licensed Emergency Medical Technician, or State of Florida Licensed Paramedic, or State of Florida Licenced Practical Nurse.

    Heart Saver Certification (within 90 days of employment)
